Weli Muhadow (also Welimuhammet Muhadow or Russian Вели (мухамед) Мухатов / Weli (muchamed) Muchatow * April 22 jul. / 5. May  1916 greg. In Bagir in Ashgabat ; † 6. January 2005 in Ashgabat) was a Turkmen composer .

Life

Muhadow, the son of a farmer, grew up in a musical environment. Reinhold Glière became aware of him during a stay in Turkmenistan in 1935 . Glière made it possible for Muhadow to begin studying at the Moscow Conservatory from 1936 (until 1951, including composition with Sergei Wassilenko ). Its deployment in World War II caused a temporary interruption.

Muhadow was a member of the Supreme Soviet several times and worked in his homeland as one of the pioneers in the development of Turkmen national music. Since 1979 he has been a professor of composition in Ashgabat. In 1993 he was invited to teach in Ankara . Muhadow received the Stalin Prize twice (1951 and 1952), in 1965 the title “ People's Artist of the USSR ”, in 1972 the State Prize of the Turkmen SSR, and in 1986 he was named “ Hero of Socialist Labor ”. He was also awarded several orders (including the Order of Lenin ) and medals.

style

In his compositions, Muhadow combined Turkmen folklore with Soviet music of the 20th century. Influences of traditional musical forms and genres from his homeland such as the mugham , which are primarily reflected in melos, harmony and rhythmic vehemence, flow into a musical language trained in the European (symphonic) tradition, for example in the symphonic poem "Mein Vaterland". Muhadow followed the aesthetics of socialist realism in particular , in that many of his compositions are characterized by pathos, heroic-patriotic gestures and an epic-wide tonal language.

He had great success with his opera Flowing Water at the End of the Bloodshed . Muhadow composed both the music for the state anthem of the Turkmen SSR and the new Turkmen national anthem , as well as numerous politically motivated vocal works. He was considered one of the most important composers in his home country.
