Festivals and art groups
- April 30th : Katherine S. Dreier , Man Ray and Marcel Duchamp found Société Anonyme Inc. in New York City . The group organizes numerous exhibitions, readings, concerts and symposia on modernism and publishes numerous publications on them.
- August 22nd : The history of the Salzburg Festival begins with a performance of Jedermann by Hugo von Hofmannsthal on the Salzburg Cathedral Square with Alexander Moissi and Johanna Terwin in the leading roles . In addition to Max Reinhardt and Hugo von Hofmannsthal, the establishment of the Salzburg Festival is mainly thanks to the composer Richard Strauss , the conductor and Viennese court opera director Franz Schalk and the set designer Alfred Roller .
Sound recordings
- January 15th : The record producer Homocord offers the first record with jazz in Germany . The recorded title Tiger Rag , performed by the Original Excentric Band , is interpreted in a way that is not typical for jazz .
- August 10 : Recording of the first blues sung in the history of sound recordings: "Crazy Blues" with Mamie Smith .

- September 21 : The song of the labor movement, Brothers, About the Sun, about Freedom is sung in public for the first time in Germany.
Instrumental music
- December 12th : La Valse Poème chorégraphique pour Orchester by Maurice Ravel is premiered as a purely orchestral work in the company of Sergei Djagilew , Igor Stravinsky , Francis Poulenc and others. The client Dyagilev rejects the piece because it is not a ballet , as he had commissioned , but a portrait of a ballet.
- The suite (Den Luciferiske) op. 45 by Carl Nielsen comes out. The work is dedicated to Artur Schnabel .
- George Enescu completes his String Quartet No. 1 in E flat major, Op. 22 No. 1

- January 20 : The world premiere of the operetta Das Hollandweibchen by Emmerich Kálmán takes place with success at the Johann Strauss Theater in Vienna. The libretto is by Leo Stein and Bela Jenbach .
- January 21 : The world premiere of the opera Der Schatzgräber by Franz Schreker takes place at the Frankfurt Opera . It becomes one of the most frequently performed contemporary operas of the Weimar Republic.
- February 12 : The world premiere of the operetta The Last Waltz by Oscar Straus with Fritzi Massary in the leading role takes place at the Berlin Theater in Berlin. The libretto is by Julius Brammer and Alfred Grünwald .
- February 23 : World premiere of the opera Der Fremde by Hugo Kaun at the State Opera in Dresden
- April 28 : World premiere of the cheerful opera Schirin und Gertraude by Paul Graener in Dresden
- May 28 : World premiere of the operetta Die Blaue Mazur by Franz Lehár at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna
- July 1st : World premiere of the opera The First People by Rudi Stephan in Frankfurt am Main
- September 3rd : World premiere of the operetta When Love Awaks by Eduard Künneke at the Theater am Nollendorfplatz in Berlin.
- October 4th : Premiere of the operetta Der rejuvenated Adola by Walter Kollo in the theater in the Kommandantenstrasse, Berlin.
- October 18 : The world premiere of the operetta Der Tanz ins Glück by Robert Stolz takes place at the Komödienhaus in Vienna.
- December 4th : The world premiere of the opera Die tote Stadt by Erich Wolfgang Korngold with texts by Paul Schott takes place at the same time at the Stadttheater Hamburg and the Stadttheater Cologne and is a great success at both locations. The libretto is based on the symbolist novel Das tote Brugge ( Bruges-la-morte ) by Georges Rodenbach .
- December 9th : Giacomo Puccini performs the fourth revised version of the opera Madama Butterfly for the first time at the Teatro Carcano in Milan.
