Robert Mann (musician)

Robert Nathaniel Mann (born July 19, 1920 in Portland - † January 1, 2018 in Manhattan ) was an American violinist , conductor , music teacher and composer .

Mann began his violin training at the age of eight and was accepted into the class of Edouard Hurlimann , concertmaster of the Portland Symphony Orchestra , in 1933 . From 1938 he studied violin with Edouard Dethier , composition with Bernard Wagenaar and Stefan Wolpe, and conducting with Edgar Schenkman at the Juilliard School . In 1946, at the suggestion of William Schuman, he founded the Juilliard String Quartet , of which he was first violinist for more than 50 years until 1997 and played the world premieres of over 100 works in well over 5000 concerts. In 2012 he founded the Robert Mann String Quartet Institute at the Manhattan School of Music , and in 2013 the Mann Quartet made its debut here with the violinists Robert Mann and Peter Winograd , the violist Nicholas Mann and the cellist David Geber . In 2014, Mann was honored with the President's Medal of the Juilliard School. Allan Miller made a documentary about man called Speak the Music in 2014 .

As a conductor he has directed the New York Chamber Symphony Orchestra , the Manhattan School of Music Symphony Orchestra and ensembles at the festivals of Ravinia, Tanglewood and Aspen. At the invitation of Seiji Ozawa , he was artist in residence at the Saito Kinen Music Festival and taught at its International Academy for String Quartets . From 1971 he was President of the Walter W. Naumburg Foundation . In 1996 he was accepted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Mann's compositions include more than thirty works for speakers and various instruments, performed by his wife, actress Lucy Rowan Mann . He also composed an orchestral fantasy, a duo for violin and piano, which was premiered by Itzhak Perlman at Carnegie Hall , a string quartet, a duo for cello and piano (for Joel Krosnick and Gilbert Kalish ), an orchestral concerto, and a lament for two Violas and Orchestra and Dreamtime , a work recorded by David Aaron Carpenter .
