Irena Anders (born Iryna Jarosiewicz , also known by her stage name Renata Bogdańska ; born May 12, 1920 in Bruntál , Czechoslovakia , † November 29, 2010 in London ) was a Ukrainian - Polish stage actress and singer .

Life

She was born as Iryna Jarosiewicz in a Ukrainian family in Bruntál (today's Czech Republic ), where her father Mykola Jarosiewicz worked as a chaplain for Greek Catholic soldiers in the Austro-Hungarian army. Her mother Olena Jarosiewicz (née Nyzhankivska) came from a Ukrainian family whose members included theater artists and musicians, she was the local sister of the composer Ostap Nyzhankivsky and the opera singer Oleksandr Nyzhankivsky. Shortly before the collapse of Austria-Hungary and the proclamation of the Western Ukrainian People's Republic , the family returned home, where their father was chaplain of the Ukrainian Legion and later a priest in the villages of Sapohiv and Bryn. In 1926 the family moved to Lviv , where Iryna attended a Greek Catholic grammar school and a Ukrainian business school. From 1929 to 1939 she also studied at the Lysenko Lviv Musical Institute, in the fortepiano class of her cousin Nestor Nyzhankivsky and later in the singing class of Mariya Sokil and Lidiya Ulukhanova. During the Second World War she worked in Henry Vars' troops and gave performances for the Polish Armed Forces in the West , under the command of General Władysław Anders . She was one of the first singers to sing the song Czerwone maki na Monte Cassino ( Red Poppy on Monte Cassino ). After the Second World War she stayed in Great Britain . In 1948 she married Władysław Anders. She has appeared in many films. In 2003 a documentary was made about her. In 2007 she received the Order of Polonia Restituta .
