George Little

Lloyd George (s) Little (born September 4, 1920 in Sydney / Nova Scotia , † October 19, 1995 in Montreal ) was a Canadian music teacher, choir conductor and organist.

Little worked as a music teacher in Nova Scotia and Quebec. He studied at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec until 1944 , then until 1949 at the École normal de musique and until 1951 at the Conservatoire de Paris organ and harpsichord.

From 1942 to 1944 he taught piano and pedagogy in Halifax and 1944/45 school music at William Dawson College in Montreal. Between 1950 and 1955 he gave courses at the Summer French School of McGill University , and at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec he taught solfège and organ from 1951 to 1957 . As a teacher of choral singing and conducting, he worked from 1953 to 1969 at the center of CAMMAC and from 1955 to 1963 at McGill University.

From 1962 to 1964 Little was music director of French Protestant secondary schools, after which he was head of the music section in the Ministry of Education of Quebec until 1969 and the arts department until 1980. In addition, he worked as an organist at various churches from 1939.

In 1951 he founded the Montreal Bach Choir , which he directed until 1965 and with which he performed works from the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods as well as contemporary Canadian composers. He also founded the Petit Ensemble Vocal in 1957 , which he directed until 1971 and, in 1953, together with his brother Carl Little, the Otter Lake Music Center (CAMMAC), of which he was co-director until 1965.

In 1983 Little was awarded the Canadian Music Council Medal and the Kodály Medal of the Hungarian state for his dedication to the composer's work. In 1993 he became a member of the Order of Canada .
