George "Jackie" Armstrong (born April 13, 1920 in Consett , County Durham , England , † July 16, 2005 in London ) was a British jazz trombonist .

Live and act

Armstrong left school at the age of 14 to work as a coal sorter. After a short time as a carpenter, he played as a professional musician in Archie's Juvenile Band . After the band broke up, he worked for Alec Halls, a trombone-playing comedian, and in a Dixieland band in Dundee . During the Second World War he was a musician with the Royal Artillery , but was used more as a driver. After the war he played with Lou Preager at the Hammersmith Apollo before Ted Heath brought him into his band there. He was featured as a soloist and also had comedic interludes, such as in the violin solo by A Thousand Violins , which he accompanied with cadences on the trombone. After six years touring with Heath, he decided to become a member of Woolf Phillips and the Skyrockets , which had an engagement at the London Palladium . He then worked in the Tommy Watts Orchestra and with Cyril Stapleton in his newly formed BBC Show Band , where he stayed until their dissolution in 1957. He also recorded with Kenny Graham and the Kenny Baker Orchestra during this time . In the following years he played with Jack Parnell and mainly as a studio musician; then he was in the Heath band under the direction of Don Lusher until their final breakup in 2000.
