Román Peña

Román Ernesto Peña (born September 7, 1920 in Baní ; † May 28, 2003 ) was a Dominican composer, violinist and guitarist.

Peña studied violin with Willy Kleimberg , Guillermo Jiménez and Emil Friedman as well as harmony and composition with Juan Francisco García and Manuel Simó . He was a violinist in the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de la República Dominicana for seventeen years .

He then devoted himself to studying classical guitar playing and founded the Amantes de la Guitarra Dr. Ramón Guerrero , a group dedicated to teaching and performing classical guitar works on radio and television.

Peña composed pieces for guitar solo as well as two concerts for guitar and orchestra, the Concierto dominicano and the Concierto Peravia . The record company Master Musicians Collective Boston produced a CD in 1998 with the two guitar concerts and ten pieces for guitar solo. The concerts were recorded by the orchestra of the Polish National Philharmonic under the direction of Carlos Piantini and the Cuban guitarist Rubén González Ávila .
