Howard Reid Cable (born December 15, 1920 in Toronto ; † March 30, 2016 ibid) was a Canadian conductor, arranger and composer.

Cable studied at the Toronto Conservatory of Music with Ernest MacMillan , Ettore Mazzoleni and Healey Willan and then continued his training with John Weinzweig . He began his professional career in 1936 as a script writer at the radio station CFRB Toronto and in 1941 he succeeded Percy Faith at the radio station of the CBC . During this time he composed for radio plays and arranged and conducted music for programs such as Music by Cable , Canadian Cavalcade , Jolly Miller Time and The Canadian General Electric Hour . His Cable Concert Band Series were also heard in the United States in the 1950s. From 1954 to 1959 he was musical director and arranger for the television program Showtime .

In the 1960s, Cable directed studio recordings in New York, arranged music for Broadway productions with Richard Rogers and Meredith Wilson, and conducted performances with musicians such as Robert Goulet , Victor Borge , Danny Kaye , Bob Hope , Marlene Dietrich , Peggy Lee , Tony Bennett and Ella Fitzgerald . At the Expo 67 in Montreal he was the producer of the musical accompanying program. From 1974 to 1986 he was music director of the Royal York Hotel and from 1975 to 1986 director of the music theater at the Banff Center .

In the 1980s Cable began conducting symphony orchestras in Canada and wrote arrangements for Canadian Brass , the Elmer Iseler Singers , the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir , the Toronto Children Chorus , Sharon , Lois & Bram and True North Brass, among others . He composed the musicals Mary, Queen of Scotts , (libretto by Christopher Gore , performed at the Charlottetown Festivals 1971 and 1972) and Rana's Pond (1990), the children's oratorio Your Work with Love Surrounds You (libretto by Peggy Feltmate , 1973) and Works for orchestra, wind orchestra, choir or wind ensemble such as Newfoundland Rhapsody (1956), Sing, Sea to Sea (1979) and Ontario Pictures (1991). His song The Saturday Game was the national hockey league's anthem for 16 years . In 1999 he was honored as a member of the Order of Canada .
