Joseíto Mateo
José Tamárez "Joseíto" Mateo (born April 6, 1920 in San Isidro ; † June 1, 2018 in Santo Domingo ) was a Dominican singer who was known as El Rey del Merengue ("The King of Merengue").
Career
Mateo became famous in the 1940s with the merengue El negrito del batey , written for him by Héctor J. Díaz and Medardo Guzmán . In the mid-1950s he came to Havana, where Alberto Beltrán introduced him to the group Sonora Matancera . He performed with the group in nightclubs and on television and recorded with her, among others, Luis Kalaff's Amor sin esperanza .
In 1962 Mateo had success with the Merengues Eres todo by R. Burgos and Noche de angustia by Victor Cordero Gonzales , both of which he performed with the orchestra of Angel Bussi . In the same year he made his first LP with the El Gran Combo from Puerto Rico. In the 2006 New Jersey Cuban Parade , Mateo was honored with a star in Celia Cruz Park .
