Luis Kalaff

Luis Kalaf (f) Pérez (born October 11, 1916 in Pimentel , † July 2, 2010 in Santo Domingo ) was a Dominican singer, guitarist and composer.

The son of a Lebanese immigrant began his musical career as an autodidact who performed with a guitar he made himself. In the 1930s he came to Bonao, where he formed his first band with Francisco Aquino . In 1939 he founded Los Alegres Dominicanos with Papa Molina and Bienvenido Brens . With the group he contributed, supported by the radio station La Voz del Yuna (later La Voz Dominicana ), in the 1940s and 1950s to spread Dominican folklore in the country.

From 1978 Kalaff lived in New York. He composed hundreds of merengues , mangulinas , salves , carabinés and boleros . In 1996 the Senate of the Dominican Republic awarded him the Orden de Caballero for his life's work .
