Pedro Vargas Mata (born April 29, 1904 in San Miguel de Allende , Guanajuato , † October 30, 1989 in Mexico City ) was one of the most popular Mexican singers of the 20th century.

Vargas began his musical career as an opera tenor. He sang in a school choir from 1917 and began studying medicine before completing vocal training at the Mexican National Conservatory. In 1928 he made his debut as Turidu in the opera Cavalleria rusticana by Pietro Mascagni and subsequently went on a concert tour through the USA.

He soon switched to Latin American music, which he made known in Europe, Asia, but above all in the USA. He appeared before Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman and was the star of the sold-out Million Dollar Theater in Los Angeles in the 1950s . Songs like Flor de Lis , Solamente Una Vez , Mi Vida , Rosa , Maria Bonita , Granada , Mujer , Portenita Mia , Me Fui , Tu Me Haces Falta and Piel Canela became known .

Vargas was considered one of the best interpreters of Agustín Lara's songs . He performed with Sammy Davis Jr. and was friends with Frank Sinatra and Julio Iglesias , with whom he recorded one of his last records. His albums appeared on RCA Records for half a century . In addition, Vargas appeared in eighty Mexican films from 1937 and directed the television program The Studio of Don Pedro Vargas for ten years .
