Louis Toebosch (1962)

Louis Toebosch (born March 18, 1916 in Maastricht ; † May 22, 2009 ) was a Dutch composer , music teacher and organist .

At a very young age he received his first music lessons from Benoit Franssen , then choir conductor of the Sint-Servaas Church in Maastricht, and received piano lessons from Alphons Crolla . He completed his studies at the Roman Catholic Church Music School in Utrecht , where he studied the organ with Hendrik Andriessen and the piano with Phons Dusch . After a year he switched to the Conservatory in Liège to continue his organ studies with Charles Hens , an organ virtuoso for romantic literature and an ingenious Bach interpreter. Toebosch developed into a great concert organist and organ improviser during his studies. At the exam, in which he performed his own composition Triptique pour Orgue , he received a gold medal for playing the organ. But he also received top honors in the subjects of harmony , counterpoint and fugue . In the meantime he had further trained in private studies for orchestral direction with Henri Hermans , conductor of the municipal orchestra , at the Musiklyceum in Maastricht.

From 1936 to 1940 he was the conductor of the choir at St. Lambertus Church in Maastricht. From 1940 to 1965 he was the organist and choirmaster at the Sacrament Church in Breda . He was a great friend of church music from the 15th and 16th centuries and studied these works with his church choir. In 1953 he founded the Orlando di Lasso choir .

From 1946 to 1950 he was also conductor of the municipal symphony orchestra in Tilburg . From 1951 to 1965 he also taught music theory , choir conducting and organ at the conservatories in Tilburg and Maastricht. The Brabant Conservatory in Tilburg elected him director from 1965 to 1973. During this time he reorganized the operations of the conservatory so that contemporary music and its forms of performance found its place through composer projects .

In the meantime he enjoyed international fame as an organ virtuoso and improviser and directed the first international organ improvisation competition in Haarlem . Because of his services to the interpretation of French organ music, he received the Silver Medal of the Academie Française . As a teacher and performer, he was always very open to contemporary music and was considered a stimulator of young composers.

His oeuvre comprises around 200 works and includes chamber music and orchestral works, but especially choral and organ music. His works have received numerous prizes and awards. Because of his great services to the Brabant Conservatory in Tilburg, he was accepted by the Queen as a knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau . Because of his services to Catholic church music, he was also accepted as a knight in the Order of St. Gregorius .
