Gabriël Smit (1966)

Gabriël Wijnand Smit (born February 25, 1910 in Utrecht , † May 23, 1981 in Laren ) was a Dutch poet and journalist .

Life

Smit published his first volume of poetry Voorspel in 1931 , this formed the beginning of about 30 volumes that he published over the next 50 years. Throughout his life he was a believer, whose faith was the main motif of his poems. In his works a desire to experience God's presence emerges in an open manner; later he turned to Mary poems and the psalms in particular . In 1933 he began his work as a journalist for the regional newspaper De Gooien Eemlander , where he worked until 1939. During this time (1934) he converted from the Old to the Roman Catholic Church . He then worked for the Utrechtsch Dagblad and De Linie as a literary critic.

From 1950 to 1960, as Godfried Bomans ' successor , Smit was head of the art department at the national Catholic daily de Volkskrant , which, since it appeared again after a four-year break during the Second World War , had established itself as the leading Catholic mouthpiece in the media. Smit regularly contributed poems to church festivals and thus decisively shaped de Volkskrant . In the first half of the 1960s he reported from Rome on the progress of the Second Vatican Council , the council becoming a decisive event in Smit's life. Many progressive forces within Catholicism, to which de Volkskrant also felt, initially had great hopes for the council, but felt great disappointment after its outcome. Smit broke with his church and resigned in 1969, a step that stood for many editors of the time, including his editor-in-chief van der Pluijm . He remained loyal to the newspaper, which now finally left its Catholic background behind and turned to the political left, until his retirement in 1975.

In addition to his journalistic and poetic work, Smit also translated works by other poets and was regularly represented on the juries of various literary prizes. He himself received rather small, local prizes, despite his success in his time, which was also based on an easily accessible language, he is well behind his predecessor Godfried Bomans in terms of popularity. This moved literarily in secular realms and was also often present on radio and television; Boman's works, unlike those of Smit, are still published today. Until the second half of the 1960s, however, Smit was an integral part of the Catholic pillar of the Netherlands and was described, for example, as the most important Marian poet the Netherlands had ever produced.
