Godfried Bomans (1965)

Godfried Jan Arnold Bomans (born March 2, 1913 in The Hague , † December 22, 1971 in Bloemendaal ) was a Dutch writer and entertainer .

Life

Bomans was born the third of six children to Catholic parents. He would later describe his father, a successful politician and entrepreneur, as creative, headstrong and authoritarian.

Bomans made a name for himself during high school on the one hand as a writer and on the other hand as a busy social man who was involved in numerous associations and interest groups, and he made his debut with a successful satirical drama and published his first poems and prose under the pseudonym Bernard Majorick , which he later sent to the sculptor and the writer Joop Beljon passed it on.

1933-1939 studied at the Bomans Gemeentelijke Universiteit Amsterdam Jus , with an interlude in 1935 in the monastery of Monte Oliveto Maggiore . It was during this time that his first books were published in 1937. In particular, Memoires of Gedenkschriften van Mr. P. Bas received the criticism very favorably.

In 1941, the same year his father passed away, Bomans became engaged. The book Erik of het klein insectenboek , published in the same year, was so successful that it was reprinted nine times in the same year .

The following years were marked on the one hand by the search for how to deal with one's own talent, on the other hand by the adversities of occupation, war and starvation winters . In 1944, Bomans got married in a civil ceremony, church only after the end of the war.

In the years after the war, Bomans achieved a significant development in writing. He worked successfully in various professions, rounded off by journalistic contributions and editorial work for Elsevier and de Volkskrant .

From the end of the 1950s, his writing activity increasingly eclipsed a variety of other activities, including an increasing presence on the radio , where he made himself popular with eloquence and a mixture of humor, seriousness and morality that was felt to be balanced. Polls of the time show him to be the best known and most widely read Dutch writer.

The late 1960s were under the influence of the social upheavals of the time, which forced the conservative Bomans to measure their views against the new reality. The questions he asked publicly in this context, including in interviews with two of his siblings who had become religious, were experienced by the population as a guide.

The last year of his life was marked by a particularly large number of activities, including a lot of traveling for reports. In the first hour of December 22nd, 1971, he died of a heart attack after a dragged-out illness.
