Bertus Aafjes (1965)

Bertus Aafjes (actually Lambertus Jacobus Johannes Aafjes ) (born May 12, 1914 in Amsterdam , † April 22, 1993 in Swolgen , Province of Limburg ) was a Dutch writer .

Life

Aafjes first began training as a priest in the Uden theologian convict and then studied classical archeology in Leuven and Christian archeology at the Pontifical Institute in Rome , where he went on foot. He then spent a few years in Italy and Egypt . In World War II he plunged during the German occupation in hiding in Friesland and wrote poems about the resistance. On Castle Hoensbroek in the Dutch province of Limburg , he later worked as a freelance writer. Aafjes used the name Jan Oranje as a pseudonym .

Writing

Aafjes was a poet influenced by the Catholic religion and German romanticism. He made his poetic debut in 1940 with Het gevecht met de muze (The fight with the muse). In 1946 he wrote Een voetreis naar Rome , a romantic-poetic travelogue about his hike to Rome, which made him known nationally; in it he describes how he came from a monastic view of life to the joy of sensual love. The epic In den beginne (1949) is an interpretation of the biblical story of Adam and Eve . In 1953, “De karavaan”, temporarily Aafjes' last volume of poetry, was published because the literary climate had changed under the influence of the Dutch literary movement of the 1950s, against which Aafjes was reluctant and which ultimately brought him serious conflicts.

After that, Aafjes mainly wrote travel reports about the Mediterranean . Among other things, he wrote "Capriccio Italiano" in 1957, an autobiography about his time while studying archeology in Rome. Detective stories about the legendary judge Ooka were inspired by his visits to Japan . He also worked as a translator, for example Homer's Odyssey (1965) and Shakespeare's Hamlet .

A collection of stories came out in 1974 under the title De laatste faun . In 1980 a volume of poetry was published, Deus sive natura , with erotic poetry .
