Denise Soriano

Denise Soriano-Boucherit (born January 15, 1916 in Cairo , † March 5, 2006 in Paris ) was a French violinist.

After the death of her father, who died when she was five years old, Soriano moved with her mother and her siblings to her grandfather in Tuscany and from the age of six had violin lessons with Ugo Bianchi at the Conservatory in Pisa. In 1928 the family went to Paris, where Soriano first attended the École Normale de Musique . Until 1934 she studied at the Conservatoire de Paris with Jules Boucherit .

She became known for a performance of Beethoven's violin concerto in the Salle Pleyel with the Orchester de la Société des concerts du Conservatoire under the direction of Paul Paray . This was followed by appearances with the Orchester Colonne , Orchester Lamoureux and Orchester Pasdeloup and a concert tour through France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland, during which she performed with orchestras under the direction of Charles Munch , Paul Paray, Georges Sébastian , Jean Martinon and Eugène Bigot and Henri Tomasi performed.

During the German occupation, she was housed as a " half-Jewish " in Boucherit's country estate La Chansonnière in Bourron-Marlotte, where he also gave protection to other threatened musicians such as Michèle Boussinot , Devi Erlih , Ivry Gitlis , Charles Cyroulnik and Michel Schwalbé . After the war, Soriano made recordings for the Pathé label with Céliny Chailley-Richez , Helene Pignari , Odette Pigault , Gisèle Kuhn , Jeanne Marie Darré and Marie Madeleine Petit, among others, and performed with Céliny Chailley-Richez and Alfred Cortot .

In 1956 Soriano married her former teacher Jules Boucherit. From this time on she devoted herself increasingly to teaching. From 1962 she taught at the Center Nationale de Télé Enseignment , from 1968 until her retirement in 1985 at the Conservatoire Darius Milhaud . From 1990 to 2004 she performed regularly every year with her own string quartet.
