action

The opera takes place in Liebenzell , a small town in the Swabian part of the Black Forest, around 1830.

The still young and pretty Veronika Schwälble believes that she has mourned her deceased husband long enough and that the time is now ripe to get married again. There is also no shortage of applicants: Kaspar Wiegele, Melchior Biegele and Balthasar Ziegele, all of them well-reputed tailors from Schönau, court her. However, Veronika cannot choose any of them. The lively craftsman Florian, who has also secretly kept an eye on her, suggests that she hold a competition: the one of the three who has made a suit for him the fastest should be the winner. The argument doesn't catch on, however; because all three tailors are finished at the same time. Now there is another criterion: which suit suits him best? All are tried on and all fit equally well. The competition ends in a draw.

Veronika has now realized that only one person can be considered for her, namely Florian. In order to outsmart the tailors von Schönau, he suggests playing blind man's cow together. The tailors join in with enthusiasm. But while they struggle in vain, the two lovers are married by Mayor Christian Folz. When the tailors realize that they have been tricked, they get angry. Mayor Folz is in top form, however, as he manages to calm the tailors down again.
