Winton Dean

Winton Basil Dean (born March 18, 1916 in Birkenhead , † December 19, 2013 ) was an English musicologist and writer. He was best known for his research on Georg Friedrich Handel and Georges Bizet .

Life

Dean was born near Liverpool to the theater director Basil Dean . After training at Harrow School (1929-1934) Dean studied at King's College in Cambridge (BA 1938 and MA 1941). He also studied music privately with Philip Radcliffe .

He became known as a music writer after serving in the British Naval Intelligence Service in World War II; initially he published some writings on compositions by Bizet (including his own directory of Bizet's works ), but then shifted his focus to Handel and in particular his oratorios and operas . Because of his preoccupation with Bizet, treatises on French and Italian opera traditions were written before Giuseppe Verdi .

Dean worked as an opera critic for English magazines and was Ernest Bloch visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley in 1965/66 .

In 1975 he became a UK Emeritus Fellow, History of Art and Music at the British Academy . He was a board member, vice-president (1991–1999) and honorary member of the Georg Friedrich Händel Society in Halle. In 1995 he was awarded the Handel Prize of the city of Halle . In 1996 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Cambridge . He was also an honorary member of the Royal Musical Association .
