Fragmenta Comicorum Graecorum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fragmenta Comicorum Graecorum (FCG) is the title of a collection of fragments by Greek comedy poets , which was published from 1839 to 1857 by the Berlin classical philologist August Meineke in the Berlin publishing house Georg Reimer . The work was the first complete collection of all comedian fragments and appeared in five volumes, which consisted of seven partial volumes. In 1847 Meineke published a two-volume Editio minor .

The first volume (1839) contains a text history of the Greek comedians and a broad index of the authors and play titles known by name. The second volume appeared in two volumes (1839, 1840) and contains the fragments of the Old Attic Comedy, the third volume (1840) that of the Middle Attic Comedy, the fourth volume (1841) that of the New Attic Comedy and the fifth volume (two Volumes, 1857) indices and supplements.

In the 19th century, the monumental work was quoted a lot and was not superseded by the small edition of the Comicorum Graecorum Fragmenta by James Bailey , published in 1840 , but a new collection gradually became inevitable due to numerous new discoveries. The three-volume edition Comicorum Atticorum Fragmenta (CAF) by Theodor Kock and the volume Poetarum Comicorum Graecorum Fragmenta in the series Poetarum Graecorum Fragmenta , which Georg Kaibel published in 1899, were also out of date a few years after their publication.

Since the end of the 20th century, the FCG have been replaced by the edition of Poetae Comici Graeci by Rudolf Kassel . This edition is calculated in nine volumes, eight of which have been published so far.
