The Ideal Wife is an operetta in three acts by the composer Franz Lehár . The libretto is by Julius Brammer and Alfred Grünwald . The world premiere took place on October 11, 1913 at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna .

The work is a complete revision of the Lehár operetta Der Göttergatte . This was based on Kleist's Amphitryon and played accordingly in antiquity . The new version takes place at the time of its creation, i.e. around 1913, in the Spanish seaside resort of San Sebastian . However, since the work did not bring the hoped-for success, another arrangement was published in 1921 under the title The Tango Queen , the success of which was also limited. The Tango Queen also plays in the same Spanish seaside resort. With a few exceptions, the same people act, only some music numbers have been deleted and replaced by new ones. Some numbers have also been retained and are included in both the Ideal Wife and the Tango Queen . The piano reductions of both works can be found under web links.

The plot revolves mainly around the relationship between Count Cavaletti and his wife. The marriage is not going very well and Elvira, his wife, leaves him to come back disguised as her sister Carola. In this role she succeeds in re-tying her husband to her and in the end saving her marriage.
