Ernest van der Eyken

Ernest van der Eyken (born July 23, 1913 in Antwerp ; † February 6, 2010 ) was a Belgian composer , conductor and violist .

Life

At the age of five he received his first musical instruction at the Music Academy in Sint-Truiden . At seven, he came into the class of music theory from Karel Candael (1883-1948) at the Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp . In 1930 he passed his first diploma examination with Jan Broeckx with success. In 1931 he also passed the diploma examination for viola with Napoleon Distelmans (1884-1946). Further courses at the Conservatory in Antwerp included chamber music with Albert van de Vijver , orchestral direction with Lodewijk de Vocht (1887–1977), harmony with Emiel-Constant Verrees (1892–1968) and Edward Verheyden . He studied counterpoint and fugue privately with August de Boeck and instrumentation with Paul Gilson . He undertook further studies in conducting with Clemens Krauss and Joseph Marx at the International School of Conductors in Salzburg .

In 1930 he made his debut as a violist in the Great Symphony Orchestra of the World's Fair (1930 in Antwerp). He also played in the well-known larger orchestras in Antwerp (Orchestra of the Royal Flemish Opera, New Concerts, Orchestra of the Zoo Concerts and various chamber music ensembles). From 1942 to 1944 he was appointed second conductor at the Royal Flemish Opera. From 1952 to 1976 he was a teacher for violin and chamber music at the Music Academy in Ekeren . He founded the Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra in Antwerp and was also the conductor . In the 1960s he was the music editor in charge of music programs on Flemish-language television. He also conducted the Antwerp Youth and Music Orchestra from 1963 to 1976 and appeared several times as a guest conductor of the Antwerp Philharmonic and the BRT (radio and television company) orchestra. In 1977 he became a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences, Poetry and Fine Arts of Belgium .
