action

Act 1 - Humbersdale Castle in Scotland Since the owner of Humberdsdale Castle, Sir Francis MacHumbers, has been missing for 16 years, his will will be opened in the castle today. The notary has therefore invited all members of the MacHumbers and Somerset families who may be entitled to inherit.

John Jack MacHumbers inherits the entire fortune on condition that he marries Lady Kitty Somerset. The problem with this is that John Jack loves Mary, called Miss Bagpipes, and Lady Kitty loves the director Harry Mortons.

Act 2 - Hotel in an English seaside resort John Jack asked for three weeks to think it over and these are now over. He has decided to refuse the inheritance and to marry Miss Bagpipes instead. In the meantime, however, Sir Francis has come back and is observing the whole thing - unrecognized by everyone - under false names. Mary learns from Sir Francis, whom she does not recognize, that if John Jack marries her, he would remain poor. In order not to stand in the way of his happiness and fortune, she therefore rejects his marriage proposal.

Act 3 - Park behind Humbersdale Castle During the discussion during a walk in the castle park it turns out that Miss Bagpipes is a legitimate daughter of Sir Francis. Capt'n Brown had adopted her with his wife Belladonna when Sir Francis traveled to the colonies. As Sir Francis' closest relative, she is of course entitled to the property and therefore does not have to do without John Jack. Lady Kitty can also marry her Harry Mortons - not bound by any obligation.
