Brüderlein fein is a folk piece with music in one act (five images). The work is close to the operetta. Leo Fall wrote the music and Julius Wilhelm the libretto. The title alludes to the most famous song in Ferdinand Raimund's play " The Farmer as Millionaire ". The first performance took place on December 1, 1909 in Vienna. The focus of the piece is the historical composer and conductor Joseph Drechsler .

action

Exactly 40 years ago today, the cathedral music director Joseph Drechsler and his beloved wife Toni said yes. If that is not a reason to celebrate! Both are in a good mood and exchange small gifts. A little wistfully they remember the time when they were young and newly in love. Suddenly a music box lets Drechsler's most famous composition sound: the song “Little Brother Fine” from Ferdinand Raimund's “Farmer as a Millionaire”. Drechsler remembers how he was still the house composer and conductor at the Leopoldstadt Theater and conducted the music for this piece countless times. Oh yes, the youth, how beautiful they were! In Raimund's magic fairy tale, too, the youth appear as an allegorical figure and sing the song "Little Brothers Fine" in a duet with Fortunatus Wurzel.

As soon as the cathedral chapel master remembers it, the room door opens as if by magic and “the youth” steps in. Of course she doesn't come without a present. Singing she explains to the two old people that they can repeat an hour of their blissful youth. As in a dream, they experience the day of their wedding again in fast motion, how guests celebrate them, how they celebrate and dance in high spirits.

When Joseph Drechsler visits the bedroom with his Toni, the dream ends. They have come back to the present and are on their way to church to thank God for giving them such a richly fulfilled life.

music

It almost goes without saying that the Singspiel also features the famous song that gave the piece its name. However, according to the article about Joseph Drechsler , the melody should not come from himself, but from Ferdinand Raimund. Drechsler only orchestrated the melody. Another highlight of the music is the performance song of the youth: "One more time you should hear my melody - an hour of your life is consecrated as a gift!"

Individual evidence

  1. As stated in Hertha Bauer's “Pocket Lexicon for Operas, Operettas and Ballets” from 1954 and other sources. The website operone (see “Brüderlein fein” at operone ) relocates the world premiere to 1908 and to Berlin and states that the librettist is “HE Falschholz”; possibly another piece is meant.
