An Herbstmanöver is an operetta by the composer Emmerich Kálmán and the librettist Robert Bodanzky . The premiere took place on January 22nd, 1909 in the Theater an der Wien in Vienna . The work is a German reworking of the Hungarian Kálmán operetta Tatárjárás from 1908.

action

Long ago Baroness Risa and Lörenthy were lovers. At that time Lörenthy was also the owner of a castle. The relationship broke up and Risa married a wealthy rival from Lörenthy. This rival took away not only his wife but also his castle. No wonder Lorenthy became bitter. He joined the army and became a first lieutenant. Well, years later, a maneuver is taking place right near this castle. Among many others, Lieutenant Lörenthy is a participant in this military exercise. The now widowed Risa lives in the castle itself. Lieutenant Lörenthy, still bitter, refuses to enter the castle. At the same time, Treszka, the Field Marshal's daughter, falls in love with Lörenthy. In doing so, she ignores the advances of a young lieutenant named Marosi.

The further circumstances force Lörenthy to take refuge in the castle. He falls in love again with Risa, who causes him to desert and stay with her. Both know that this will mean the end of the lieutenant's military career. Worse still, the field marshal demands severe punishment. But he can be changed by persuading Risa and Treszka. He reduced the sentence to 24 hours. Then Lörenthy is free for Risa. At the same time, Treszka, who now has to realize that she has no chances with Lörenthy, devotes herself to her admirer Marosi. So in the end, in the classic operetta tradition, the two couples found each other and nothing stands in the way of a happy ending.

reception

With an autumn maneuver, Emmerich Kálmán earned his first respectable success on German-speaking stages. The work was very well received and even made it to Broadway in New York under the name The Gay Hussars . Then it was performed in other cities and in the UK. The work held up well in German-speaking countries for a few years before it was gradually displaced from the repertoire by other great operettas. Like all works by Emmerich Kálmán, it was banned during the Nazi era. Even after the war, the plant led a shadowy existence. It was rarely or never played. It has only recently experienced a renaissance. In 2017 it was played in Giessen. For this production, the Gießen City Theater received the October Frosch 2017 from BR Klassik .

Sound carrier

The production of the Stadttheater Gießen was recorded on a CD. This was released by the Oehms Classic label in collaboration with HR2. The ensemble of the Gießen Theater, the choir of the Stadttheater Gießen and the Philharmonic Orchestra Gießen sing and play under the direction of Michael Hofstetter.
