The mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting loss of jobs in rural areas have led to an - albeit small - increase in population even in small towns since the middle of the 20th century ( rural exodus ).
economy
The area around Carbonero el Mayor was once forested and served as a hunting area and for the energy-intensive production of charcoal ( carbonero = "charcoal burner") and pottery. After the clearing, fields were created and cultivated; Small traders, craftsmen and service providers have settled in the village. Tourism in the form of renting holiday apartments (casas rurales) hardly plays an economic role in the wide, flat landscape of the Meseta. The place has a motorway connection to the Autovía de Pinares (A-601), which connects Valladolid with Segovia.
history
Small Celtic and Roman finds were made in the municipality; possibly the area was on an old trade route between the Roman cities of Segovia and Coca . visigothic and even Moorish tracks have not yet been discovered - so it is thought a medieval foundation after the recapture (reconquista) Segovia by Alfons VI. (1085). Later the place belonged to the Villa y Tierra de Segovia .
Attractions
- The oldest remains of the church of San Juan Bautista date from the 13th century; Around 1500 the church was rebuilt in Gothic style and changed to Baroque style in the 1830s . The three-aisled church building has a late Gothic star vault , a crossing raised and exposed by a tambour and a transept in the Renaissance style. The church hides several baroque altarpieces (retablos) , but its jewel is the main altar with 22 picture panels in Flemish style from around 1530, which show the four evangelists and scenes from the life and passion of John the Baptist and his successor Jesus Christ . The baptismal font could still come from the previous Romanesque building.
- The Palacio del Sello is an aristocratic palace built from rubble stones from the 16th century. A stone heraldic shield is emblazoned above the portal framed by an Alfiz .
- Surroundings
- The comparatively large building complex of the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Bustar is located outside the village.
- Of the churches or chapels of the abandoned places ( despoblados ) Quintanas and Santa Águeda only ruins remain.
