Donhierro is a municipality ( municipality ) in the province of Segovia in the autonomous region of Castile and León . It borders on the province of Avila . Donhierro has an area of ​​17.22 km² with a population of 91 inhabitants (2019) and is located near the Rio Adaja , around 68 kilometers northwest of Segovia .

In the middle of the 13th century, the place was first mentioned in historical records as Don Fierro , which refers to a repopulation of this name. The name suggests a Basque origin. At that time there were two other small settlements in Don Fierro, Botalhorno and Salvador de Cuellar , but were not mentioned later.

Worth seeing

Iglesia Parroquial de San Lorenzo (Parish Church of San Lorenzo), a baroque building made of brick and clay, with a three-part bell tower. The only nave with two side chapels on both sides was dedicated to the patron saint San Lorenzo. The altarpiece depicts San Isidro and San José. The side chapels are flanked by images of the Virgin of the Rosary, Christ crucified and the Immaculate Conception of Mary. The patron saint is celebrated every year on August 10th.
