Location and climate

The place Samboal is located in the largely flat agricultural landscape of the Castilian Meseta about halfway between the cities of Valladolid and Segovia at an altitude of about 790  m . The climate is temperate to warm; the rather sparse rain (approx. 410 mm / year) falls spread over the year with the exception of the dry summer months.

The mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting loss of jobs in the countryside have led to a continuous decline in the population since the middle of the 20th century. The hamlet (pedania) Narros de Cuéllar, which was incorporated in 1970 and has around 150 inhabitants , also belongs to the municipality.

economy

Samboal and its surrounding area are traditionally oriented towards agriculture and were a center of textile production in the Middle Ages and the early modern period ; Small traders, craftsmen and service providers of all kinds settled in the place. Today, in addition to agriculture and viticulture, tourism - mainly in the form of renting out holiday apartments (casas rurales) - plays a not insignificant economic role.

history

Celtic , Roman , Visigoth and even Arab-Moorish traces are missing. The demonstrable history of the site begins with the founding of a Benedictine - priory in the 10th or 11th century, which, depending on about 80 km northern monastery of San Isidro de Dueñas was.

Attractions

Iglesia de San Boal
  • The Iglesia de San Boal , built almost entirely of bricks in the Mudejar style in the 13th century, is dedicated to St. Consecrated to Baudilius of Nîmes ; rubble stones are found under the plastered surfaces as filler material. The blind arcades of the semicircular apse are arranged on three floors, those of the fore choir bay are only two floors . Both components rest on a foundation of thick, uncut stones. A transept adjoins it to the west ; the nave of the church was renewed in the 18th century. The tower rising above the north transept chapel and other parts of the church were restored in the 1990s. The interior of the church has a single nave and is barrel vaulted ; here, too, bricks dominate. The church retains a Romanesque baptismal font from the previous building, but no reredos etc.
Surroundings
  • The Ermita de San Marcos stands on a small hill about four kilometers northeast of the village . It still has two unadorned Romanesque brick portals.
