The mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting loss of jobs have led to a - albeit small - decline in the population since the middle of the 20th century ( rural exodus ).
economy
Abades is traditionally agriculture-oriented, but small traders, craftsmen and service providers have also settled in the village. Tourism in the form of renting holiday apartments (casas rurales) hardly plays an economic role in the endlessly flat landscape of the Meseta.
history
Celtic , Roman , Visigoth and even Moorish traces have not yet been discovered. The first mention of the place name comes from the year 1108. Later the place belonged to the Villa y Tierra de Segovia . The local church was built in the late 17th century; nothing is known of a previous medieval building.
Attractions
- The parish church of San Lorenzo Mártir is a single-nave building with a domed crossing and a transept . The high windows are included in a stucco cap vault . The church contains several baroque altarpieces (retablos) . The organ dates from 1698.
- The Ermita de la Soledad is in the middle of town.
- The Ermita de San Sebastián is located near the cemetery.
- Surroundings
- The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios , built in the 15th century and with a two-part bell gable (espadaña) , is about two kilometers outside the town ; the small pillar-supported porch was added in 1752. The spheres on the corners of the structure and on the bell gable are remarkable .
