economy

With the exception of barley and a little wheat , hardly any grain was possible to grow on the barren soils of the cold plateaus of the Segovia province . For centuries, the population lived mainly from breeding sheep and goats, from whose milk cheese was made, which after laborious transport could be sold at the market in Sepúlveda or exchanged for flour, vegetables, etc.

history

Little information is available on the history of the place: it goes back to the Middle Ages; around the year 1000 the place appears as part of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Sepúlveda . The Romanesque church of San Pedro is still a testimony to the heyday of the place in the High Middle Ages; the tower of the church was renewed in the 16th century.

Attractions

  • The Romanesque Iglesia San Pedro received a south porch ( portico ) made of precisely hewn stones around 1200 , the five arches of which are symmetrically arranged on the south side; another portal arch is on the east side. In the same context, a tower was built in the south-west corner, but it was rebuilt or renewed in the 16th century (perhaps even later) in the Renaissance style. The decor of the two porch portals consists of circumferential zigzag patterns that are not interrupted by capitals , as can be found in the churches of Sotosalbos , Perorrubio and on the west side of the church of El Arenal . The actual archivolt portal to the church is in the line of the vestibule portal ; it emerges from the surrounding, albeit plastered, quarry stone masonry and shows a rich decoration of rosettes , leaf motifs, spirals , block friezes and tendrils . Above all, the rosette and spiral patterns on the face of the inner arch are rarely seen in their kind in European Romanesque; perhaps they were assigned a disastrous ( apotropaic ) function. The many - unfortunately already badly damaged - depictions of birds and people on the capitals and consoles also deserve attention.
