The mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting loss of jobs have led to a significant decline in the population since the middle of the 20th century ( rural exodus ).
economy
Escalona del Prado is traditionally agriculturally oriented, but small traders, craftsmen and service providers have also settled in the village. Tourism in the form of renting holiday apartments (casas rurales) hardly plays an economic role in the endlessly flat landscape of the Meseta.
history
Celtic , Roman , Visigoth and even Moorish traces have not yet been discovered. The local church dates from the 17th century; nothing is known of a previous medieval building.
Aeródromo de Escalona del Prado
There was a small field airfield south of the village during the civil war . This was built at the beginning of the conflict by the National Spanish Air Force and had two runways. After commissioning, it was used both by the Spanish national air forces and by the German Condor Legion, which supported them . For German fighter pilots, Escalona was the first front-line airfield that was used from the end of August 1936, a few months later, before the Legion was officially founded. During the war, the Germans repeatedly used the site as an advanced base of operations for the squadrons of Jagdgruppe 88 (J / 88) during the long siege of Madrid . or Battle of Brunete in the summer of 1937. The place was very well camouflaged so that it was hidden from the Republican Air Forces and the Red Army who supported them .
