Sotillo is a small mountain village with only 27 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the Spanish province of Segovia in the autonomous community of Castile-Leon .

location

Sotillo is located in the barren mountain landscape in the northeast of the Segovia province at an altitude of approx. 970 meters above sea level. d. M. The distance to the nearby town of Sepúlveda is about 14 kilometers (driving distance) in a north-westerly direction. The provincial capital Segovia is located about 63 kilometers southwest.

The hamlet of Fresneda de Sepúlveda , which belongs to the municipality , still has about five inhabitants, whereas Alameda de Sepúlveda was abandoned in 1857.

economy

With the exception of barley , hardly any grain was possible to grow on the barren soils of the cold plateaus of the Segovia province . For centuries, the population lived mainly from breeding sheep and goats, whose milk was used to make cheese, which after laborious transport could be sold at the market in Sepúlveda or exchanged for flour, etc. The wool of the sheep was spun and in winter it was woven into lengths of fabric from which simple clothing was made. Goat hair was only suitable for making weatherproof throws ( ponchos ) or for sacks, ropes, etc. or for filling sacks that served as mattresses.

history

After the successful reconquest ( réconquista ) of the areas occupied by the Arabs and Moors for about 300 years, the place was repopulated ( repoblación ) in the Middle Ages by Christians from the north but also from the south of the Iberian Peninsula ( Mozarabers ).

Attractions

The only attraction of the place is the Romanesque Iglesia de la Natividad de la Virgen with its Islamic or Mozarabic influenced portal and its console friezes and metope fields underneath the eaves , all of which are decorative or figurative.
