Quentin Jackson

Quentin Leonard "Butter" Jackson (born January 13, 1909 in Springfield / Ohio , † October 2, 1976 in New York City ) was an American jazz trombonist .

Jackson learned to play the trombone from his brother-in-law, Claude Jones . He worked with Zack Whyte in 1930 , with McKinney's Cotton Pickers in 1931 , with Don Redman 's Orchestra from 1932 to 1940 , with Cab Calloway from 1940 to 1948 and then with Lucky Millinder .

From 1949 to 1960 he worked as a soloist and band musician with Duke Ellington . After a European tour with Quincy Jones Big Band , he played 1961 - 62 with Count Basie and played recordings with Charles Mingus , namely, the legendary albums The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady and Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus ( 1963 ). After joining the bands of Louie Bellson and Gerald Wilson , he was a member of the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra from 1971 to 1976 .
