Valdemar Söderholm

Valdemar Söderholm (born November 18, 1909 in Moliden , † November 10, 1990 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish composer and music teacher .

Söderholm studied from 1934 to 1937 at the Stockholm Conservatory , where he passed the organist and music teacher exams. He then studied music theory, counterpoint and composition with Finn Høffding in Copenhagen .

From 1940 to 1946 he worked as a church musician in Eksjö , after which he was cantor of the Hedvig Eleonora congregation in Stockholm until 1976. He also taught music theory at the city's music academy from 1956 to 1976. His students included Anders Eliasson , Lars-Erik Rosell , Dan-Olof Stenlund , Folke Rabe , Jan Sandström , Stig Gustav Schönberg , Sten Ingelf and others.

Starting with older church musicians such as Giovanni Palestrina , Hans Leo Hassler , Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach , Söderstrom followed strict formal rules in his compositions, which he also maintained in his dodecaphonic works. His most important works were the Saligprisningarna ( Beatitudes ) for solos, two choirs, organ and orchestra. He also composed a. a. Organ and piano works, an organ concerto, motets and other choral works.
