Folke Rabe (born October 28, 1935 in Stockholm ; † September 25, 2017 there ) was a Swedish composer , jazz trombonist , music producer and radio editor .

Life

Rabe studied from 1957 to 1964 at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm with Valdemar Söderholm , Bo Wallner , Karl-Birger Blomdahl , Ingvar Lidholm , György Ligeti and Witold Lutosławski . From 1968 to 1980 he worked for the Rikskonserter Foundation , which was dedicated to organizing concerts and concert tours in Sweden, and from 1976 to 1980 as its program director. From 1980 to 2000 he worked at Sveriges Radio as a producer, editor-in-chief and program director. Since then he has been a freelance composer.

In the 1950s Rabe played the trombone in Dixieland and swing bands, later in big bands under the direction of Lulle Ellboj , Harry Arnold and Arne Domnérus . In the 1960s he became known as a composer of avant-garde pieces such as Pièce for speaking choir, Bolos for four trombones (with Jan Bark ) and Rondes for choir. In the field of choral music he experimented with improvisation techniques, graphic notation and overtone singing. Since the 1980s Rabe has increasingly composed works for wind instruments such as Basta for trombone solo, Tintomara for trumpet and trombone, the wind quintet Escalations and Jawbone Five for trombone and percussion ensemble . He composed smaller pieces for trombonist Christian Lindberg and trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger . Between 1983 and 1997 Rabe was a member of the multimedia artist ensemble Nya Kulturkvartetten .
