- January 1st : World premiere of the opera Eva by Josef Bohuslav Foerster at the National Theater in Prague
- January 17th : World premiere of the opera Die POWs by Karl Goldmark at the Court Opera in Vienna
- January 29th : World premiere of the opera Your Excellency by Richard Heuberger at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna
- February 26th : World premiere of the opera Der Pfeifertag by Max von Schillings at the Court Theater in Schwerin
- March 21 : premiere of the opera Regina by Albert Lortzing . The work, composed in 1848, was only performed long after Lortzing's death in the Berlin Royal Opera due to political concerns. However, the work has since been edited again by Adolph L'Arronge in order to avoid censorship.
- May 1 : At the Apollo Theater in Berlin, the composer conducts the world premiere of the burlesque-fantastic furnishing operetta Frau Luna by Paul Lincke based on a libretto by Heinrich Bolten-Baeckers . It becomes the composer's most successful work.
- May 24 : The fairy tale opera Cendrillon by Jules Massenet with the libretto by Henri Cain based on the fairy tale Cendrillon ou la Petite Pantoufle de verre ( Cinderella or the little glass shoe ) by Charles Perrault has its world premiere at the Opéra-Comique in Paris with great success . It will be played on three continents over the next ten years.
- July 26th : The operetta Die Landstreicher by Carl Michael Ziehrer will be premiered at the Venice Summer Theater in Vienna . The libretto is by Leopold Krenn and Karl Lindau .
- October 26 : The operetta Wiener Blut by Johann Strauss (son) with the libretto by Victor Léon and Leo Stein is premiered at the Vienna Carltheater . The music was compiled by Adolf Müller junior based on the motifs of the late Johann Strauss. The premiere was a failure. Later, however, the work was able to prevail.
- November 14 : World premiere of the opera The Saracen by César Cui at the Mariinsky Theater in Saint Petersburg
- November 23 : premiere of the opera Die Teufelskäthe by Antonín Dvořák in Prague.
- December 18 : The operetta Im Reiche des Indra by Paul Lincke based on a libretto by Heinrich Bolten-Baeckers and Hans Brennecke is premiered at the Berlin Apollo Theater .
