- January 5th : The Viennese operetta Der Obersteiger by Carl Zeller based on the libretto by Moritz West and Ludwig Held is premiered at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna with Alexander Girardi in the leading role.
- March 16 : The world premiere of the opera Thaïs by Jules Massenet with a libretto by Louis Gallet based on the novel of the same name by Anatole France takes place at the Grand Opéra Paris and is critically received.
- March 18th : World premiere of the opera Weltfrühling by Hans Huber in Basel
- May 8 : World premiere of the opera Le portrait de Manon by Jules Massenet at the Opéra-Comique, Paris
- May 10 : Premiere of the opera Guntram by Richard Strauss in Weimar.

- December 16 : The opera Donna Diana by Emil Nikolaus von Reznicek is premiered at the Deutsches Theater in Prague . The composer used the Spanish comedy El desdén con el desdén by Agustín Moreto as a template .
