- April: The Neapolitan musician and composer Eduardo Di Capua writes the song 'O sole mio .
- September 19 : In Stockholm , after a construction period of around six years , the Royal Opera House , newly built in neoclassical style by Axel Anderberg , opens in the presence of King Oskar II . Is played Adolf Fredrik Lindblad Opera Frondörerna (The rebels) .
- December 14 : The Vienna Volksoper opens under the name Kaiser-Jubiläums-Stadttheater on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the throne of Franz Joseph I. The emperor stayed away from the opening because of the murder of his wife.

- January 5th : The world premiere of the Viennese operetta Der Opernball by Richard Heuberger with the libretto by Victor Léon takes place at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna .
- March 8th : The world premiere of the tone poem Don Quixote by Richard Strauss takes place in Cologne's Gürzenich with the conductor Franz Wüllner . It is based on the novel Don Quixote de la Mancha by the Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes and is composed in the form of a Sinfonia concertante , with a solo cello representing the figure of Don Quixote , as well as viola, tenor tube and bass clarinet soloists, the Sancho Pansa represent.
- May 24th : Premiere of the opera Fantasio by Ethel Smyth in Weimar.
- May 28 : World premiere of Arthur Sullivan's romantic musical drama The Beauty Stone at the Savoy Theater, London
- October 20 : The musical comedy The Departure of Eugen d'Albert based on the literary model of the same name by August Ernst von Steigentesch is premiered in Frankfurt am Main .
- November 18 : The world premiere of the musical tragedy Don Quixote by Wilhelm Kienzl takes place in Berlin.
- November 22nd : Premiere of the opera Iris by Pietro Mascagni in Rome.
- December 7th : World premiere of the opera Mozart and Salieri by Nikolai Andrejewitsch Rimsky-Korsakow in Moscow.
