Will shade
Will Shade (born February 5, 1898 in Memphis , Tennessee , USA ; † September 18, 1966 there ) was the head of the Memphis Jug Band , which was America's most popular jug band between 1927 and 1934 . Shade was nicknamed Son Brimmer after his grandmother, Annie Brimmer, who he grew up with .
In 1925 he first heard recordings by the Dixieland Jug Blowers from Louisville . A little later he founded the Memphis Jug Band , in which he himself played guitar, harmonica and the bullfiddle , a one-string barrel bass he made himself . He was also the singer of the band.
After the Memphis Jug Band broke up in 1934, Shade continued to play with various jug bands, often with Charlie Burse . In 1956 the two were rediscovered by the blues researcher Samuel Charters . Before his death, the album American Skiffle Band was released , with Charlie Burse and Gus Cannon as participating musicians. In 1966, Will Shade died of pneumonia in Memphis.
