- December 31 : The Teatro Amazonas opera house in Manaus , Brazil, financed with funds from the rubber boom, is inaugurated. The first opera is performed on January 7, 1897.

- January 29th : World premiere of the opera Kudrun by Hans Huber in Basel
- February 1 : The opera La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini with the libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa based on the novel Les scènes de la vie de bohème by Henri Murger has its world premiere at the Teatro Regio in Turin under the direction of Arturo Toscanini . Cesira Ferrani sings the part of Mimì . Despite bad reviews after the premiere, the verismo- related opera becomes a global success.
- March 2nd : USA of the opera Zanetto by Pietro Mascagni in Pesaro.
- March 7 : World premiere of the comic opera The Grand Duke by Arthur Sullivan at the Savoy Theater, London.
- March 21 : World premiere of the opera Das Heimchen am Herd by Karl Goldmark at the Court Opera in Vienna
- April 20 : World premiere of the operetta El Capitan by John Philip Sousa at the Tremont Theater in Boston
- April 25 : The operetta The Geisha by Sidney Jones has its world premiere at Daly's Theater in London.
- June 7th : The opera Der Corregidor by Hugo Wolf based on a libretto by Rosa Mayreder is premiered in Mannheim with great success.
- September 23 : The premiere of the opera The four-year post of Franz Schubert takes place nearly 68 years after the composer's death at the Court Opera in Dresden.
- October 21 : World premiere of the Opéra-comique La poupée by Edmond Audran at the Théâtre de la Gaîté in Paris
