- May 7th : The Vienna music and theater exhibition opens. Until October 9th, around 1.25 million people will visit the themed “small world exhibition ” taking place in Vienna's Prater around the rotunda on the site of the 1873 world exhibition .
- August 27 : The Metropolitan Opera on New York's Broadway is badly damaged in a fire.
- November 19 : The Theater am Schiffbauerdamm opens as a private stage in Berlin .

- January 16 : Premiere of the operetta Das Sonntagskind by Carl Millöcker at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna.
- January 20 : The world premiere of the lyrical drama La Wally by Alfredo Catalani based on a libretto by Luigi Illica based on the novel Die Geierwally by Wilhelmine von Hillern takes place at the Teatro alla Scala di Milano in Milan.
- February 16 : The opera Werther by Jules Massenet has its world premiere at the Vienna Court Opera . The libretto is by Édouard Blau , Paul Milliet and Georges Hartmann based on the epistolary novel The Sorrows of Young Werther by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe .
- February 17th : The world premiere of the opera Winkelried by Louis Lacombe takes place at the Grand Théâtre de Genève .
- March 8th : The opera Heilmar der Narr by Wilhelm Kienzl is premiered in Munich.
- May 21 : The veristic opera Pagliacci ( The Bajazzo ) by Ruggero Leoncavallo is premiered at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan under the direction of Arturo Toscanini .
- June 14 : The world premiere of the operetta Signora Vedetta by Richard Genée takes place in Wiesbaden.
- September 24 : World premiere of Arthur Sullivan's opera Haddon Hall at the Savoy Theater, London.
