- 4th January : The world premiere of the operetta The poor Jonathan by Karl Millöcker takes place at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. The libretto is by Hugo Wittmann and Julius Bauer .
- January 15 : The ballet Sleeping Beauty choreographed by Marius Petipa with music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky premiered at the Mariinsky Theater in Saint Petersburg.
- May 13 : The lyrical drama Dante by Benjamin Godard is at the Opéra-Comique premiered in Paris.
- May 17th : The opera Cavalleria rusticana ( Sicilian Peasant Honor ) by Pietro Mascagni with the libretto by Giovanni Verga has its world premiere at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. The opera becomes the composer's greatest success.
- November 4 : The opera Fürst Igor by Alexander Porfirjewitsch Borodin is premiered three years after the composer's death at the Court Opera in Saint Petersburg.
- December 19 : The opera Queen of Spades by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, based on a libretto by his younger brother Modest Tchaikovsky , based on the story of the same name by the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin , is premiered at the Mariinsky Theater in Saint Petersburg.
