Jakow Andreevich Eschpai

Yakov Andreyevich Eshpai ( Russian Яков Андреевич Эшпай ; orig. Ишпайкин / Ischpaikin , born 18 jul. / The 30th October  1890 greg. In Kokschamary ; † 20 February 1963 in Moscow ) was a Russian composer, folk music researcher and educator from the people of Mari .

Eschpai attended the music school in Kazan from 1910 . From 1913 he was a singing teacher in Ufa , from 1918 he taught music theory in Kokschamary and from 1924 in Kosmodemjansk . In 1930 he completed his composition studies with Georgi Konjus at the Moscow Conservatory . From 1931 he was a research assistant at the Scientific Research Institute of the autonomous Soviet Republic of Mari in Yoshkar-Ola and from 1932 headed the section of the State Music Publishing House . In his works he used motifs from Mari folk music. He edited several collections of Mari folk songs .

His son Andrei Eschpai (1925–2015) was one of the most famous Soviet composers.
