August Friedrich Martin Klughardt (born November 30, 1847 in Köthen (Anhalt) , † August 3, 1902 in Dessau ) was a German composer and conductor .

Vita

Klughardt received his first piano and music theory lessons at the age of 10 and soon began to compose first pieces for a music group he founded at the grammar school. In 1863 the family moved to Dessau ; the following year Klughardt made his debut as a pianist. After graduating from high school, he went to Dresden in 1866 to take further lessons there. During this time he went public with his first compositions. From 1867 he was mainly active as a conductor; first he worked at the city theater in Posen (1867/1868), then a season at the city theater in Neustrelitz and finally a few months in Lübeck . From 1869 to 1873 he worked at the court theater in Weimar , where he made the acquaintance of Franz Liszt , which was to be of great importance for his further work. In 1873 Klughardt went to Neustrelitz again to work there as sole conductor and from 1880 as director. In 1876 he attended the first Bayreuth Festival . In 1882 he accepted the position of court conductor in Dessau, which he remained until his death. In 1892 and 1893 he conducted Richard Wagner's Ring .

In the last years of his life, Klughardt received a number of honors; In 1898 he became a member of the Berlin Academy of the Arts , and in 1900 an honorary doctorate from the University of Erlangen . He also received the offer to apply to lead the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin , which he refused.

style

Klughardt's meeting with Franz Liszt in Weimar laid the foundation for his enthusiasm for the New German School , especially for Richard Wagner. This can also be seen in his work, in which some influences from this direction can be seen. However, his admiration for Wagner and Liszt did not prevent him from cultivating the genre of the symphony and chamber music extensively; Moreover, he did not write a single symphonic poem , but programmatic overtures . In any case, Robert Schumann's influence on his work is far more dominant. Klughardt endeavored to synthesize these two unequal currents by making use of Wagner's leitmotif in his operas , but not abandoning the old number opera . In some works he shows himself very clearly as a child of his time, especially in the patriotic flushes of compositions such as the choral work The Border Correction (on the occasion of Germany's victory in the Franco-Prussian War ). Overall, Klughardt can be seen as a rather conservative composer despite his interest in newer trends. Today he is almost forgotten; only three of his works are occasionally still played: the cello concerto, the reed songs and the wind quintet.
