Nicolás Ruiz Espadero

Nicolás Ruiz Espadero (born February 15, 1832 in Havana ; † August 30, 1890 there ) was a Cuban pianist and composer .

Espadero was a student of the pianist Fernando Arizti and the pianist and composer Julian Fontana . He was considered the most important pianist and composer in Cuba in the 19th century and performed in Cuba and South America as a concert pianist and accompanist.

He composed a Rondó brillante for string quartet, El canto del esclavo for violin and piano, two piano sonatas and a capriccio for piano, a Serenata cubana for voice and piano and other piano pieces, including numerous danzas . In his works he took up motifs from Cuban folk music.
