Events
- Former politicians Frank Hatton and Beriah Wilkins buy The Washington Post . On the occasion of this event, they commissioned John Philip Sousa to compose a march . The Washington Post March premieres on June 15th as part of a children's essay contest.
- October 6 : The Moulin Rouge , which was built by Joseph Oller and Charles Zidler and will become the most famous variety theater in the world, opens in the Montmartre district of Paris in the 18th arrondissement . The name goes back to the famous replica of a red mill on the roof.

- César Franck : The Symphony in D minor , the only symphony by the Belgian composer, has its world premiere at the Conservatoire de Paris with Jules Garcin at the podium.
- Gustav Mahler : The first performance of the 1st symphony (Titan) will take place on November 20 at the Royal Hungarian Opera in Budapest under the direction of the composer.

Musical theater
- March 2nd : The world premiere of the operetta Capitain Fracassa by Rudolf Dellinger takes place at the Carl Schultze Theater in Hamburg.
- April 21 : The world premiere of Giacomo Puccini's second opera Edgar with the libretto by Ferdinando Fontana at the Teatro alla Scala di Milano in Milan is disappointing.
- May 15 : The world premiere of Jules Massenet's opera Esclarmonde takes place at the Opéra-Comique in Paris.
- December 7th : The operetta The Gondoliers or, The King of Barataria by the composer Arthur Sullivan and the librettist WS Gilbert has its world premiere at the Savoy Theater in London. The operetta is the twelfth in the collaboration between Gilbert and Sullivan and their last great mutual success.
