Václav Kaprál

Václav Kaprál (born March 26, 1889 in Určice , † April 6, 1947 in Brno ) was a Czech composer.

Life

Kaprál studied composition with Leoš Janáček from 1907 to 1910 and from 1919 to 1920 with Vítězslav Novák, and studied piano with Marie Kuhlova , Adolf Mikeš , Klara Schäferova and finally Alfred Cortot in Paris . In 1911 he founded a private music school in Prague. Between 1919 and 1928 he also worked as a choir director and music critic for several magazines. He also performed as a piano duo with Ludvík Kundera in the 1920s . From 1927 he taught at the Masaryk University in Brno , in 1935 he became a professor at the Conservatory and a member of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts . In 1942 he was arrested by the Gestapo and was in the Swatoborschitz camp until 1945 . Since 1946 he has taught at the Brno Music Academy. His daughter Vítězslava Kaprálová was also known as a composer.

Kaprál composed sonatas , sonatinas and other pieces for the piano, two string quartets and a piano quartet , a mass , choral works, songs and folksong arrangements .
