Antoni Kątski
Antoni Kątski ( Antoine de Kontski ; born September 25, 1816 in Kraków , † December 7, 1899 in Iwanytschi ) was a Polish piano virtuoso and composer.
Life
Kątski came from a family of musicians: his brother Karol was also a piano virtuoso, his brothers Stanisław and Apolinary were violinists. He was a student of John Field and studied at the Conservatory of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna . Until 1851 he worked as a pianist in Paris , until 1853 as court pianist in Berlin and later in Saint Petersburg . After a stay in London , he lived in New York City from 1883 to 1889 .

He composed over four hundred mostly brilliant salon pieces for the piano, including famous character pieces such as The Lion's Awakening . In addition, he also wrote an opera ( Marcello , 1880) and three operettas : Les Deux Distraits (based on The Dispersed by August Friedrich Ferdinand von Kotzebue , 1872), Anastasie (1882) and Le Sultan de Zanzibar (1885).
