Apolinary Kątski ( Apollinaire de Kontski ; born October 23, 1825 in Warsaw ; † June 29, 1879 ibid) was a Polish violinist , composer and music teacher .

Life

Kątski came from a musical family. His brother Stanisław also became a violinist, his brothers Antoni and Karol pianists. His sister Wanda was also musically gifted. At the age of four he began taking violin lessons under the supervision of his father Grzegorz. At the age of five he performed the violin concerto by Pierre Rode at the court of the tsar in Saint Petersburg .

Kątski spent the years 1836 to 1839 in Paris as a student of Niccolò Paganini . Together with his brothers and sister Wanda, he visited numerous metropolises in Europe with concerts. In 1837 he performed in London as part of Queen Victoria's coronation ceremony . In 1849 he performed in Cracow , in 1850 in Warsaw . Three years later he was appointed soloist at the court theater in Saint Petersburg - as the successor to Henri Vieuxtemps .

Kątski also dealt with chamber music - together with Anton Grigorjewitsch Rubinstein , Theodor Leschetizky and Alexander Sergejewitsch Dargomyschski . He returned to Warsaw at the end of the 1850s. On January 26, 1861, his Warsaw Music Institute was inaugurated, where he became director and took over the direction of the violin class.

Among his students was u. a. Stanislaw Barcewicz .
