Stanisław Barcewicz (born April 16, 1858 in Warsaw ; † September 1 (according to other information: August 29 ) 1929 there ) was a Polish violinist, chamber musician, conductor and music teacher.

Life

Barcewicz studied violin with Apolinary Kątski and Władysław Górski at the Music Institute in Warsaw. He continued his education at the Conservatory of the Imperial Russian Music Society in Moscow with Ferdinand Laub and Jan Hřímalý and studied composition with Tchaikovsky .

In 1876 he completed his training with a gold medal and began a career as a violin virtuoso. He performed in Paris, Leipzig, Hamburg, Berlin, Koblenz and London and made concert tours through Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Russia. As a chamber musician he often appeared with the pianist Aleksander Michałowski and in 1892 founded a string quartet with which he gave hundreds of concerts until his death.

In 1885 Barcewicz became concertmaster in the Warsaw Opera Orchestra, and in 1886 he made his debut here as conductor in Amilcare Ponchielli's opera La Gioconda . From 1893 to 1909 he was second conductor of the Warsaw Opera. Here he mainly directed the performance of operas by Polish composers, in addition to which he also conducted symphony concerts.

From 1886 Barcewicz taught violin and viola at the Warsaw Music Institute, headed a class for chamber music and the institute's orchestral school, of which he was director from 1910 to 1918. His students included Pjotr ​​Stoljarski , Józef Ozimiński , Józef Jarzębski and Mieczysław Karłowicz , who dedicated his Violin Concerto in A major to him.
