Jan Hřímalý

Jan Hřímalý (even John or Ivan Hrimaly , * 13. April 1844 in Pilsen , † January 11 . Jul / 24. January  1915 greg. In Moscow ) was a Czech violinist and music teacher .

Life

After taking violin lessons, he studied with Moritz Mildner at the Prague Conservatory until 1861 . After concerts in Germany, he was concertmaster of the Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra from 1862 to 1869. At the invitation of Nikolai Rubinstein he became a teacher in 1869 and a professor at the Moscow Conservatory in 1874 .

He led a string quartet, conducted the symphony orchestra and, as a soloist, became an expert on Tchaikovsky's compositions . As a teacher, he followed the style of his predecessor and teacher Ferdinand Laub and founded a Moscow school of violin playing. His students included violinists such as Stanisław Barcewicz , Paul Juon , Reinhold Glière , Wladimir Bakaleinikoff , Iosif Kotek , Juli Konjus and others. The poet Andrei Bely mentions him by name in a poem as Professor Hřimalý .

Hřimalý wrote several music pedagogical works that are still used in violin lessons today. His brother Vojtěch Hřímalý was also known as a violinist and composer, his brother Jaromir Hřimalý (1845–1905) was a cellist. Stanisław Barcewicz was one of his students .
